The Church of Christ

The church of Christ is composed of people who, through faith and repentance, wear the name of Christ which they put on in immersion (Galatians 3:26-27). This unique institution is called various things in scripture: the kingdom (Matthew 16:18-19), the church (Acts 20:28), the house of God (1 Timothy 3:15), the body of Christ (Ephesians 1:21-23), the sheepfold (John 10:11-16), and many other names. What makes the church of Christ unique is that the blood of a Divine One--Jesus Christ--purchased it (Acts 20:28). It is that blood of Jesus that is capable of washing away the sin of the world (Revelation 1:5; John 1:29), and was shed for His church (Ephesians 5:25). What also makes this church unique is that Jesus Himself will save it, and it alone (Ephesians 5:23).

  • Its Founder:  Jesus Christ (Matthew 16:18). It is the church which belongs to Him.
  • Its Creed:      The New Testament of Jesus Christ (Colossians 3:17). No man's creed is used.
  • Its Head:       Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:23). No man is the head of this church.
  • Its Origin:     The mind of God (Ephesians 3:8-11).
  • Its Purpose:  To seek and save lost souls (Matthew 28:18-20).
Entrance into this church is easy. "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him" (Hebrews 11:6). There are three things involved in faith: 1) Believing that God is, 2) believing that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him, and 3) being a diligent seeker of Him. Believing that God exists is simply a matter of looking at nature and reasoning correctly about it (Psalm 19:1-6). Believing that God is a rewarder of the one diligently seeking Him takes trust. Abraham was one who believed God, and he was counted as righteous (Romans 4:3). Abraham trusted God and believed that God would give him the promises. But, like Abraham, we must act upon those things the Lord requires of us:
  1. Hear and believe the gospel (Romans 10:17; Acts 16:30-31).
  2. Turn back from sin to the Lord (Acts 17:30).
  3. Confess your faith in Christ (Acts 8:37).
  4. Be immersed in water for the remission of your sins (Acts 2:38).
At this point, you are added to the church (Acts 2:41, 47). From this point forward, live a faithful life even to the point of dying for Him, and He will reward you (Revelation 2:10; Psalm 19:11; James 1:12).
